Inexpensive Home Remedies to See You Through the Cold Season

There's no getting away from it. Winter is here and inevitably you're going to get sick. You can go to the drugstore and pick up some over-the-counter remedies, but do they really work? And how safe are they with all their side effects?

The good news is you can fight these scourges with home remedies, many of which have been used almost since the beginning of time. Even better, these concoctions are inexpensive to prepare and offer relief that often begins right away.

Let's look at some popular home remedies for the following ailments:

Sore Throat - This is one I've used over the years after an old country doctor told me about it. Use good old salt and water. Take about a teaspoon of salt and stir it into a cup of warm to hot water and gargle. Do this every half-hour, and it ... Read More »

Why do we vote on a Tuesday... in November?

The short answer: We used to be a nation of farmers.

The long answer: Congress chose November because the harvest was over and the weather wouldn't be bad enough to prevent people from traveling.

As for Tuesday, people used to have to travel overnight to their polling location. (In 1845, horse was the preferred method of transport.) In an effort to avoid religious days of rest, Congress chose Tuesday, leaving Monday and Wednesday as travel days. Tuesday was voting (and horse-resting) day.

For example, in the kitchen here’s what you can do:

  • Organize a spice rack or toss out old spices!
  • Empty the dishwasher and wipe out the inside.
  • Quick clean one part of the refrigerator. Wipe the door or handles. Go through the salad dres ... Read More »

Bath Salts
Make your own special bath treat by combing 3 cups of Epsom salt, 1 tablespoon of glycerin, a bit of your favorite perfume or essential oils, such as peppermint, bergamot, rose or lavender, in a glass or metal bowl (you can add a few drops of food coloring, if you want). Put 1/2 cup or more of the mixture into the hot bath. Store the rest in an attractive apothecary jar with a latch.
